The 'Mute

this is certainly a bit strange… i’ve posted on plenty of websites over the last few years, i’ve even created, run and killed off an e-commerce website but up to today, i’ve never had a desire to run a ‘blog’…

the reason this page is here is entirely due to a very good friend (and as is presumably the ettiquete in these situations, fellow blogger ;) mr c. cat, also known as coofer cat, or just ralphie. he suggested i combine my hobbies of photography and digital imaging with an interest in all things interweb & computer – hence “the ‘mute’” was born.

the intention is to publish a few photo’s and digital images, make a few new online friends and hopefully learn a thing or two along the way.

the name comes from my favourite book of all time, william gibson’s neuromancer. if you’ve not read it then i can thoroughly recommend it… my copy was purchased many years ago and is very well thumbed.

visitors who think that schnoop.net might be interesting will feel cheated, there is nothing there except a ‘logo’ i made far too quickly in photoshop one night. watch this space though, as i get into it more i’ll no doubt actually do something with my little corner of the internet.

you’ve probably already noticed that i don’t like capital letters and the format of this site will change – soon!

i’m using wordpress and i have to say that i was completely blown away with the installation process. the readme said it was a five minute install… that needs to be edited to read one minute. seriously! unzip the contents of the archive into the right directory, copy and edit the well documented configuration file, create the database table using mysql’s control centre (yes, i’m english which makes it a centre) and add a user – then run the install.php script and that was it! it’s the easiest software installation process i’ve ever experienced. add a vhost to apache’s config and make sure that the DNS entry for mute.schnoop.net pointed to the right place and it’s sorted. well done to the wordpress team!

i’m not snobbish about photography, i’ve got a couple of photo’s that to me are absolutely amazing but you might look at them and think they are below average – there are memories that sometimes cannot be conveyed in an image… i am however (according to brian at least) at technofetishist (google for that one ;) and within seconds of getting a new toy i start thinking about how obsolete it is!

so, what next… i’ll probably post again in a year or two, when i’ve got some content to put up.

not sure who i’m speaking too and this isn’t a letter so i’m not sure if sincerely or faithfully is the right way to close this first post… i’m not going to hold my breath for anyone to post on this site but feel free to do so. the site is intended to reflect an interest in all things photography & internet but pretty much anything goes; except child porn – don’t think i need to elaborate on that any further.
