fackin’ apple have done it again!

Filed under: General, Internet, View Finder, iPhone — robert at 8:41 pm on Wednesday, June 17, 2009

this time last year with shiny new iPhone in my sweaty paws I was unable to activate it… this year the iPhone is rather less shiny and my paws somewhat less sweaty as a result but like many iPhone users i’m trying to upgrade to the 3.0 software but despite having downloaded the 230Mb update via iTunes i am yet again unable to activate:
Activation Error

I’ve used a packet analyser and can see that the payload being sent is tiny (297 bytes to be exact) and only contains a few salient details about my phone, within 0.18 seconds (every time!) i get a response that reads “DOWN”:

<dict>
  <key>Status</key>
  <string>DOWN</string>
</dict>

which is served up in an HTTP 200 response, odd… surely if there was a timeout it would take a while (hence the name “timeout”) or the server would send an HTTP 503?

the cynic in me is wondering whether my geographic location (UK) is being used against me, it’ll be interesting to see over the next few hours if Americans are having problems re-activating already active iPhones?

yet again, Apple have pissed me off at a moment when they should be bringing a big smile to my face…

Update: Activation worked… I’m still feeling let down but I’m sure I’ll get over it ;)

Manchester to Blackpool ride…

1000 miles, two Macs & music that messed up my head

Filed under: Mac, Riding, View Finder, iPhone, iPod — robert at 10:26 pm on Tuesday, May 19, 2009

i’ve just clocked up 1000 miles on my road bike, needs new tyres and i recently got a slightly shorter stem because my elbows were aching when i was riding – a 1cm shorter stem has completely solved the problem!

my macbook pro arrived, then went back a few days later… all because of a single dead pixel! yeup, a single dead pixel… there are 2.3 million of the little things on the screen so i’ve rejected an entire computer because of a fault that affected one two point three millionth of a screen but given the price it simply wasn’t good enough… i can’t fault Apple, TNT arrived the next day to collect the box, all i needed to do was write a tracking number on the box and they took care of everything else. i’m sure there was something odd with the screen though, the Macbook Pro has two graphics controllers (an Nvidia GeForce 9400M and a 9600M GT) that have different power consumption characteristics, when using the 9400M the screen on the original laptop flickered badly but not when the 9600M was enabled – trouble is, that card use more power… this new one doesn’t suffer from the problem? odd…

the mac is truly amazing, i’ve kicked myself several times that i’ve never moved to Mac before, the UI is so much better than Windows and any Linux distribution I’ve used – it is truly user centric… usability is simply wonderful… i bought the Apple iWorks software which provides a word processor called Pages, a spreadsheet application called Numbers and a presentation creation app called Keynote… they all work wonderfully, provide all the features you need and i’m starting to resent that I have to use M$ Office at work! Pages does not pretend to be a page layout application, it is perfect for pretty much any document I think i’ll need to write and if I want page layout I’ll turn to InDesign anyway… Numbers is a pleasure to use, provides a wealth of features that just make your life tick along nicely, the graphs are so much better looking that anything I’ve ever seen from Excel and it’s a doddle to use… i’ve not used Keynote yet other than to tinker but that too looks very nice… there is no fuss with any of these applications, in fact there is no fuss with anything (not even when a single pixels goes to pixel heaven)… i am delighted with the mac… battery performance is stonking, the screen is wonderful, i’m not used to the keyboard yet, i don’t like that the @ symbol is on the 2 key where the ” should be and the ” is where the @ should be and the | is above the right hand shift key and the enter key is bit too small (in my opinion) but those really are minor gripe… the trackpad is a pleasure to use and makes the one on the fairly expensive Dell my wife uses seem completely naff and pointless, gestures work brilliantly…

oh, and time machine… at the risk of gushing about a little white box, it is absolutely amazing, the system automatically backs itself up and i can go to any version at any time just by clicking, check out the video and i defy anyone who has had that awful realisation that the file you really need has gone… with time machine it really hasn’t… seriously, it’s such a clever approach to backing up files

finally music… i’m currently listening to The Back Room Editors but despite the fact that it is playing from iTunes on my mac, i am listening to it through the Bose speakers via the amp of my separates but not only that, i can use my iPhone to change the track… so i can see my entire Mac iTunes library on the iPhone, select the music/volume etc. and play it but not from the speakers on the mac, it uses AirTunes to send the audio to a wireless gizmo that is connected to the HiFi… i don’t think i’m a stupid person but when the music started playing from the Bose cubes i felt like a little kid gazing in wonder at how all these things were interconnected with virtually no wires and essentially zero effort required for setup!

i am truly impressed with how easy to use Apple products are, i know that sounds like i’ve turned into an Apple zealot but i don’t believe I have, I just believe i have found a hardware, software & application combination that puts me in the middle of what i’m trying to achieve and i would strongly argue that if the premium price Apple charges covers their usability testing then i’m more than happy to cough up…

My second, first Apple

Filed under: General, Mac, View Finder — robert at 7:53 pm on Tuesday, April 21, 2009

Having already had “my first Apple” it only seems right that I have another one… So I’ve ordered a new toy… According to the shipping status it’s in the UK and will hopefully be delivered in the next day or two…

I can’t wait to really get to grips with a completely new computer, OS and applications. Obviously I’ve done the “move the mouse and load an app” on machines in the Apple store but now I’ll have the opportunity to really get under the skin of it…

Ouch!

Fell off me bike earlier… took a corner a little too quick, transition from knobblybobblygrippy road to a rather more smooth one resulted in the tyres deciding that they were bored doing their job and that my arm and leg should be the thing in contact with the road…

tsk…

Update: Looks like my left hand brake/shifter is broken… my local bike shop said it’s nothing to do with coming off and apparently the Sora, Tiagra and 105 range have all suffered from these problems because the shifter can handle both double and triple front mechanisms… a shifter that is designed specifically for a double front mechanism like I have ain’t cheep though!

Biking…

Late last year I got a new road bike… It’s an Orbea San Remo (I’d love to post a direct link but the Orbea site doesn’t make it easy… this link should have the details but it’s not a pretty page…

The bike is lovely to ride, really comfy and I’m planning on riding the 17 or so miles to work when it’s convenient…

I’ve decided that I should do a little training and get in [much] better shape for the Manchester to Blackpool ride on the 12th of July, it’s a charity event but I’m not sure which charity to try and raise a few quid for yet…

Anyway, I’m posting this as a reminder to myself to get off my fat arse from time to time and ride a few miles further in preparation… I’m really looking forward to it…

Safari…

Filed under: General — robert at 10:25 pm on Tuesday, February 24, 2009

Out of interest, I’ve just downloaded the new Safari browser (on the Vista laptop that technically belongs to my wife)… I’m writing this using it :)

It looks fantastic, the Top Sites bookmarks and Cover Flow history feature is very attractive and there is no doubt the browser is fast…

However, I won’t be using it for one reason. It is not possible to change the search engine URL… I cannot believe that I am unable to select google.co.uk rather than google.com! I’ve searched the Internet but am unable to find anything other than plugins that in reality provide custom search capability… I do not want to search for something only to have US centric results…

Sorry Apple… till this is resolved I won’t be using it… shame, it provides some gloss that is missing from Google Chrome.

Restore Windows MBR

http://ms-sys.sourceforge.net/

This software is stonking! I’ve just had a wobble on a dual-boot Debian/Windows machine, started getting strange errors and couldn’t seem to get grub to behave… eventually I found a utility called ms-sys which compiled with no problems and worked first time…

Thank you to the author, this is the way it should be done… no fuss…

Update: Just found this on shell-fu, it’ll probably come in handy at some point… http://www.shell-fu.org/lister.php?id=803

iPhone 2.1

Filed under: General, Review, View Finder, iPhone — robert at 8:21 am on Sunday, September 21, 2008

iPhone 2.1 firmware was released so I decided to upgrade… t’was a good decision for the most part…

firstly battery life is now double what it was, the phone feels faster to use and 3G performance is no worse than it was…

SMS features are still poor, apps do still crash from time to time and I’ve had to reset a couple of times because of what seem to be safari DNS issues that are strange codes (and even more strange when they trigger on google addresses that I use regularly for search & reader, I assume this thing does cache?)
